The Missing New Year Post

If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you? Maybe. It seems as if every other blogger was posting a 2011 year in review and/or a list of 2012 goals/races. I haven't done either. I succumbed to the peer pressure last year and wrote a 2010 review. This year however, I was in the midst of the holiday madness in addition to the taper madness. I just didn't have the time to sit down and reflect on the year like I normally do. It doesn't help that I am also a New Year's Eve scrooge.

I don't fully understand it but I have never liked New Year's Eve. There is so much pressure to go out, party, have fun and then make resolutions. I'm a home body so I'm perfectly content to just stay in and go to bed early. No pressure in that! The Pilot was home but we didn't make any plans so we ended up getting some much needed things checked off our "let's sell this condo" list (cleaning and de-cluttering). I gave myself a pedicure and he updated his airport charts. Exciting. Unlike last year though, we did stay up until midnight. The Pilot was trying to shift his body clock in preparation for his next trip which includes 3 days of late nights. I didn't have that excuse but I stayed up anyways....I kissed my husband at 12:00 am and by 12:05 am I was in bed and dreaming of 1/2 marathon PRs.

As for resolutions...I don't make them. Throughout the year, I set goals and tackle them. If I fail, I reevaluate and try again. It's an ongoing process. I feel like resolutions set people up for failure in the first month of the year. Why not just constantly resolve to try harder?

I'm not a complete Scrooge McDuck and I have taken the time to reflect on the past year so here it is...just a few days late compared to the other overachievers bloggers.

2011 was by far the most incredible year of my life. I'm not being dramatic at all. It truly was an amazing year and I get all warm and fuzzy when I think back of all the great things that happened. One thing I didn't do (which is sort of crazy considering this is basically a training blog) was track my mileage at all. I have no idea how many miles I ran/walked/swam/cycled. I did enough to not gain weight. I did enough to survive all of my intended races. Works for me. Besides, I was too busy with all this madness to keep track of miles:
  1. My best friend asked if he could be on my cell phone contract.
  2. I started and finished the hardest endurance event I've ever participated in: Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge.
  3. I finished my first Mud Run.
  4. I coached the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon for the first time.
  5. I started and finished my first Sprint triathlon (3rd triathlon).
  6. Saw U2 for the first time....one of those bands on my bucket list!
  7. I legally became The Pilot's BFF and had one heck of a party to celebrate.
  8. I ran my first virtual 5k.
  9. I ran my first Quarter Marathon.
  10. I bonded with my father in law during 13.1 miles during the Air Force 1/2 Marathon.
  11. Went on a minimoon with my new husband (the real honeymoon is coming up in a couple months!).
  12. I had a huge weight lifted from my shoulders.
  13. I enjoyed my first turkey free Thanksgiving.
  14. Ran the worst race in the history of road races but had fun with my bestie.
  15. I sweated a lot. :)

It was an incredible year. It's going to be tough to beat all that awesomeness but I'm looking forward to 2012. In fact, I wouldn't mind if my life could be put in slow motion (with the exception of my racing!) for the year. 2011 flew by and it was hard to take a deep breath and enjoy some of it in the moment. It would be nice to slow down a little....but not too much that I get bored.

So there was my missing New Year post. I hope that you all had an amazing 2011 and here's to another year of fun, struggles, successes, failures, races, sweating and spending time on the right side of the grass.
